The Kebbi State Government in collaboration with other Global Partners have launched the first Rice Fortification Project aimed at raising the Nutrition level in Schools.
The Rice Fortification pilot project is supported in Nigeria by Global Alliance for Improvement of Nutrition (GAIN) and World Food Program (WFP) .
Launching the Project in Abuja, the Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu said Kebbi State is happy to be the first State in Nigeria to embrace, produce and use Fortified Rice.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafidan Kabi said successive studies on malnutrition in the northwest region of the country have stressed the need for Kebbi State Government to scale-up food and nutrition interventions to ameliorate the sufferings of the people caused by malnutrition.
He added that the Government has recently finalized the State's Food and Nutrition Strategy Document to enable it implement food and nutrition policies to fight against malnutrition and related public health challenges in the State.
The Governor therefore appealed to all development partners especially those with mandate on food and nutrition to join hands with Kebbi State in making the Project a success.
He explained that rice being a major staple food, the fortification of rice is an excellent addition to current food and nutrition interventions which would help many people especially most vulnerable to malnutrition with essential vitamins and minerals for improved wellbeing.
Governor Nasir Idris added that Kebbi State is happy to be pioneer of rice fortification in Nigeria through active partnering with GAIN and WFP on the Promoting Rice Fortification in Nigeria (PRiFN) Project which has facilitated training for Kebbi State Government officials, schools and rice millers.
He expressed gratitude to Wacot Rice Mill for the trials and appreciated the partnership of Bakaba and Labana Rice Mills who are at various stages of producing their brands of the fortified product.
Also Speaking, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu emphasize the need to improve on the nutrition of our children. He congratulated Kebbi State Government and GAIN for making the Project a reality.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Country Director of Global Alliance for Improvement of Nutrition, GAIN, Dr. Michael Ojo commended the Kebbi State Government for Partnering to improve the nutrition of its citizens.
He said GAIN has been unwaivering ally of Nigeria for many years with the mandate to enhance diets of 7.5 billion people around the world by 2027.
In his remarks, the Country Director of the United Nations World Food Program WFP, Mr. David Stevenson, commended Kebbi State Government for its commitment to the welfare of the people.
He lauded the wise economic decision of the government for investing in Rice Fortification Project and agreeing to introduce Fortified Rice in Schools Feeding Program.
He pledged the WFP continuous support to the Government.
In their goodwill messages to the launching, both the Ministers of Agriculture and Health through their representatives congratulated and commended the Kebbi State Government for introducing Fortified Rice to Schools Feeding Program. There were also goodwill messages from the Standards Organization of Nigeria SON, NAFDAC and National Fortification Alliance NFA for the initiative.
Highlight of the occasion was the formal launching of the Fortified Rice project by the Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafidan Kabi who was assisted by the notable dignitaries present at the ceremony.
